When I saw “Specialized English Program 1” listed as one of the subjects for our second term, I was immediately interested. In all honesty, I think I’m better at English than Filipino, and I thought that another English subject could further improve my vocabulary and communication.
The subject had been a good ride for me. Ma’am Escosio seemed very passionate about her teachings. She was considerate and very generous in giving feedback. I remember an instance where my phone died in the middle of a quiz, which I told her about. She let me use her laptop to finish the quiz and praised my score, even though it wasn’t as high as I expected it would be. With all of this in mind, she’s certainly an English teacher that you’d want for your class.
The activities that we did for this subject were very memorable. I remember when we had to present our technical text activity in class, and in order to increase the engagement, we offered prize money to whoever could guess the words that we picked from the technical text. I also remember the time when we had to make a persuasive letter to FEU’s president. While I thought ours was a good balance of persuasiveness and formality, the overly persuasive letter from another group won, but I have nothing against them since they still did a good job. And lastly, our final activity for our iCARE forms involved having a discussion with our groupmates. While I thought it was unnecessary at first, I gained valuable insights from my peers about e-commerce.
This subject made me less nervous when speaking in front of people. Ever since high school, I’ve suffered from severe stage fright, which hindered my public-speaking abilities. But along with my desire to share my knowledge with everybody, this subject encouraged me to do so in a non-pressuring manner and has helped me substantially in my communication skills.
This webpage contains one of the few activities that we did for this subject, and this digital reading portfolio is a sign of my progression in speaking and writing. Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to apply what I learned. It has always been my dream to be a public speaker who shares valuable knowledge with everyone about the topics that I’m passionate about, and this subject is a part of my journey to get there. Lastly, I would like to thank my friends, classmates, and our professor for making this subject a memorable part of my college experience.
